hands lie the welfare of the whole family and society; they are the
keepers of the commons and the indigenous seed heritage of the
country. Yet, they are almost completely in the unorganized sector
(71%) having no assets or economic security. Even though Indian
economy is growing at a rate of 9%, 52% of women of the country
suffer from malnutrition; they go hungry even when the granaries are

Famous world wide for
having three mass
breeding habitats for
Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys
Olivacea) sea turtles,
Odisha may have to lose
these turtle nesting
sites on its coast line.
Planning
of a series of ports in the name of development by the government of
Odisha, just to make
use of the 480 KM long
coast as a primary
resource, would badly
affect the coastal ecosystem and would, also, force the endangered
Olive Ridley sea
turtles to abandon the
sites for annual mating
and nesting activities.>>> Read More
Food security is
threatened in parts of
Odisha where climate
change has been a
phenomenon. Rise in
temperature and sea
level has made
agriculture vulnerable
as seawater is more
often gushing into the
land filling their paddy
fields with saline
water.
Because
agriculture is almost
regularly hit by tidal
waves and floods, food
security of these people
has been threatened as
they have no other
option to earn a
livelihood and feed the
family.

Villages on the coast of Bay of Bengal at Astarang have been
struggling for their survival against the wrath of frequent tidal

Documentary Film on the impact of climate change across the
coastline of Odisha is in the making.
The villagers of
Navjeevanpur (near
Dhenkanal in Orissa),
known as 'Ghantara',
have been working day in
and day out since many
generations to
keep a tradition alive.
They take all pains to
make the craft product
called Dhokra but the
benefits are enjoyed by
the middlemen and local
money lenders who supply
the raw materials to the
village artisans and
give them some advance
money on the condition
that the ownership over
the final Dhokra
products would not
remain with the artisans, but
with the middlemen and
Money Lenders. (Hi8
