Reign of Violence in Kandhamal

Kandhamal became the epicentre of caste conflict resulted in communal violence in the year 2008 following the murder of Swami Laxmanand Saraswati. The violence continued for more than two months and took at least 40 lives and affected over 24000 people of the minority community. Story of the Dhokra Village

The villagers of Navjeevanpur (near Dhenkanal in Orissa), known as 'Ghantara', have been working day in and day out since many generations to keep a tradition alive.They take all pains to make the craft product called Dhokra but the benefits are enjoyed by the middlemen and local money lenders who supply the raw materials to the village artisans and give them some advance money on the condition that the ownership over the final Dhokra products would not remain with the artisans, but with the middlemen and Money Lenders.
