Summer heat and ground fire put forest and wildlife of Odisha at risk

The heat of Summer added with ground fire in different forests of Odisha have made the forests unfit for the wildlife because the water sources have gone dry. This is the reason why wildlife is more often risking by venturing into human habitations for food and water. On Tuesday, 8 May 2012, an elephant calf fell in a dried up well while in search of water in Bolangir's Agalpur. The calf was rescued by combined efforts of villagers and forest department people. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik appeals Maoists to release the Italian citizens

Responding to the news of abduction of two Italian tourists by Maoists in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik held a meeting with Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the DG Police to discuss the hostage crisis and step ahead in the direction of resolving it.

A Snake Helpline Volunteer Subhendu Mallick of Bhubaneswar hatched baby cobra snakes from 17 eggs at his home. Bred at home in a controlled atmosphere, the cobra eggs started hatching in 45-47 days while naturally it takes about 60 days.

From the success in hatching the cobra eggs at home, Subhendu hopes that this method may be applied in a larger scale for saving the reptiles that are on the verge of extinction. (Bhubaneswar, July 2010)

The villagers of Navjeevanpur (near Dhenkanal in Orissa), known as 'Ghantara', have been working day in and day out since many generations to keep a tradition alive.

They take all pains to make the craft product called Dhokra but the benefits are enjoyed by the middlemen and local money lenders who supply the raw materials to the village artisans and give them some advance money on the condition that the ownership over the final Dhokra products would not remain with the artisans, but with the middlemen and Money Lenders.
